I have a brand new ML2 and I am trying to deploy an sample application. When I connect my ML2 compute unit USB-C port to the USB-C port on my desktop I get warnings from both ends. My desktop gives a voltage irregularity warning and my ML2 gives a warning about not charging the compute unit with the right equipment. Cant find anything in the docs about this. Help?
Which computer are you using? We recommend using the cables that come with the device, but the power warnings on the headset only mean that the headset won't charge well from the computer and you should be using the outlet charging cable that comes with it. We haven't encountered voltage warnings from the desktop before so it would be useful to know what type of machine you are using.
Hello Matthew,
Thanks for reaching out to Magic Leap. Your post was directed to the Care team. We understand you're getting an error when plugged into your desktop. It's possible the Magic Leap 2 is reading that you're desktop is trying to charge the device which might be why you're seeing the error as the device can only charge with the correct wall charger that's provided with the device.
Can I ask you a few questions about your Magic Leap 2?
- Is your device updated to the latest OS?
- Does your device give this warning everytime you plug into your desktop?
- Can we get a good contact phone number in case we need to call you for further troubleshooting?
- Can you provide us with the ML2 serial number on your device?
Thanks for your patience!

Hi Matthew,
This is expected behavior. The Magic Leap 2 cannot be charged off of most laptop USB-C ports as they don't provide the necessary charge. You will need to charge your ML2 with the provided wall power adapters.
Is there anything else I can assist you with?
Thank you,
Its not the charging thats the issue. Im trying to use the USB-C port to upload a program and it gives me the same error.
Can you please provide a screenshot of what you're seeing or better yet, a video of the sequence of events, I want to make sure I'm understanding what the problem is fully.
Can't really take a picture, but I will give more details. I am trying to complete the tutorial here: Create a Project | MagicLeap Developer Documentation. I am completing these steps and then using a USB-C cable to attach the ML2 to my Dell XPS 8940 port on the front of my tower. I get these errors:
And one on my ML2 about the wrong charging equipment.
Hi Matthew,
Okay, I guess I'm still not quite sure what's going on. Is this somehow preventing you from completing the tutorial? I ask because that warning or a warning like that is going to pop up any time you plug your ML2 into a computer in most cases. It should not prevent data transfer, it just means that the port cannot charge your device. What am I missing here?
Thank you,
OK. It is not allowing me to deploy the sample project. I am using these settings in Unity.
I click build and run, like it states in the tutorial. Unity then shows me an error:
I cannot get past this point. It seems the USB connection is not working. I am assuming it is because of the warnings.
Also, the ML2 is not showing on the Device bridge when it is connected via USB
For what its worth, I fixed it. I tried a USB-B to USB-C cable and it works perfectly. Not sure why C-to-C didn't work, but I can now use device properly.
Well that's good news. Strange that the C port didn't work, maybe it's malfunctioning on your computer?
I've had this issue for a while too. Tested this issue with multiple Windows and Mac computers. Found the following:
USB-B to USB-C cable is needed to use the ML2 with a Windows computer
ML-provided USB-C to USB-C cables work just fine with Macs
Hi Emmy,
I can tell you with certainty that USB-C to USB-C cables provided with the ML2 work just fine on my Windows laptop. There might be an issue with the port in your case. What Windows computer are you using where you experienced this behavior?
Thank you,
I had the issue with: Lenovo Legion Tower 5, HP Envy Desktop, and a Dell G7 laptop
